Best blog domain names – How to check for domain names and availability

Having a domain name is important for your business or blog as this is how the world will find you on the internet, it is your World Wide Web address, so to speak. Your very own piece of the internet, much like real estate.

It is a good idea to spend some time deciding your domain name and what type of domain name will be best suited to your website. Do not be in a hurry with this one as it will often set the tone for your site and business.

Owning your own domain has its benefits.  As you develop your site and increase your rankings in Google, Bing and Yahoo your domain will also increase in value, which can later be sold for a profit.

Here I will help you to understand when starting your own business or blog, how to check for domain names and availability as well as suitable companies to host either for free or at prices to suit all budgets.

Best blog domain names

When you build a website you will need an address so people searching for your company or blog can easily find you. Just like the physical address of your home or business.

Within the internet, this is in effect an URL address, but to make it simple for us non-IT folk we use names which are either linked to the name of the business or the name of the site.

When choosing the name there are a few things to bear in mind.

A website for a business should contain the business name –If you have a local business and your website is to drive more customers to your premises then the name on the site and business should be the same so people can easily search.

It is best to avoid characters and symbols in your domain name. – we are all living a busier life these days, one where people want to find information on the go.  It is, therefore, best to use domain names which can be typed into the browser quickly.

Greatwebsite.com is a much better option than gr8website.com. although “8” can be typed faster not everyone will realise the word has been substituted by the number so you could end up losing traffic.

Local support – if you are in a business or have a blog which is targeting a local audience then you may wish to opt for a local domain, such as co.uk or co.za.   This is great if you intend to deliver to a local audience, but if you wish to expand to a global audience then rather choose a .com domain from the beginning.

It does not need to contain keywords – keywords are best used in your posts and articles on the website for SEO and to direct traffic.

Use one of the common domains .com .org .netWhen people type in a name to search for a website they will use these as they are more familiar. Almost 50% of the websites are .com.  If your preferred name has been taken with .com TLD, you can opt to use .org or .net or contact the owner of .com to see if they will be willing to sell their domain.

Trendy names – although most websites end in .com there are now more options available for trendy names such as .guru or .photography.

Research options for domain names

If you already have a site name in mind and wish to register your own domain you will first need to check it’s availability.

But some people find it hard to think of a name or are worried that it is already being used by another company or blog.

It is advisable to check the availability first and there a number of companies who can assist you to do this.

Namemesh

This is a great tool to use if you are not sure of your preferred name and are in need of some inspiration and guidance.

Simply type your preferred name in the box provided and it will let you know if this exact name is available in the preferred .com option. If so great!

If not it will give you options of other domains such as .org .net. Etc which you can then chose.

One of the reasons I like this particular platform is it provides so many additional names from which to choose and some that you certainly would not have thought to consider.

Some other popular domain name generators you may wish to investigate

Nameboy – One of the oldest name generators who has been helping website owners since 1999.

Domain.com – Another popular domain name generator with plenty of options

Domain name registrars

As we mentioned your domain is, in essence, your Internet real estate so it is critical to know that registrar of your domain is a reputable, trustworthy company

There are plenty of registrars in the market, here are my recommendations.

GoDaddy – A very popular registrar and website host. Their initial offer to register your .com domain is very inviting with offers as low as $2.99 / for your 1st year when you register 2 years together, but a word of caution, your 2nd year will increase to $17.99/year.  If you are just starting out with your blog or online business I would suggest you initially register for one year only until you are sure of the direction and name for your business.

Bluehost – They offer domain registers with a variety of annual prices for the different TLD’s (Top-Level Domain).

Namecheap – This company offer, as their name implies, very cheap domain registers. However, as usual, there is a catch.   All other services come at an additional price and the first year’s price is cheaper but will increase in year 2.  You do however receive WhoisGuard for free.

My absolute favourite registrar is Wealthy Affiliate

When using Wealthy Affiliate to register you have an option to purchase for a single annual period with the option to extend this further if you want to secure the name.  The cost is the same in the second year as year one.

After the initial period and if you have opted for an Auto-Renewal, Wealthy Affiliate will contact you when the renewal date is approaching as a reminder.

Don’t worry if you have already purchased a domain name and wish to move it to another host this is usually acceptable as in the case at Wealthy Affiliate

My main source of information for building a website comes from my membership within a great community of Wealthy Affiliate.

Over the years I have learned a lot about domains from the lessons included in their university.

Apart from the lessons provided Wealthy Affiliate they also offer website hosting services and supply products to assist with keyword research.

Again I use their hosting services for all my websites and it is where I go to purchase my domains once I am happy with my choice of name.

It’s your choice

So as you can see choosing a name for your business or site is not necessary as simple as you may have originally thought.

I would suggest you do some research and make sure you are buying from a reputable company, your website may require additional investigation.

I hope you have found this to be of some use in your search for your perfect name!

I welcome any questions or comments you may have so please let me know if I can help you further.

  • For a couple of weeks now I’ve been thinking that maybe my domain name is no good because it doesn’t have any keywords in. I see you wrote that a domain name doesn’t need to have a keyword, I’m curious though, do you think a site with keywords in the domain name would rank better?

    • Hi Hollie,

The best place for your keywords is in the title of your posts.  If you are targeting low hanging keywords and long tail keywords, it should increase your traffic and help with your SEO.

When your posts start ranking on page one etc then this is where people will click to read your post and then be directed to your site.

      Hope this helps.

Thanks for your taking time to comment, I appreciate it.

  • Dear Debbie,

I must say I found your post highly uplifting & educational and I can tell you I have taken some great insights from this post.

Your post can be used as a guide in knowing the importance of domain, things to consider before choosing a domain and the best place to buy a domain. You have covered everything and for sure this post is going to save many people time and money.

The comparison of different domain providers is very helpful and insightful.

To share my own experience my domain is registered with WA. As you mentioned they are not only cheaper they are providing a great service. I am amazed when I transferred my site to SSL (HTTP to HTTPS) its free and very simple with WA. I came to know others are charging a lot for it.

    Much Success!

    Paul

    • Hi Paul,

I am so glad you found my post helpful.

I must admit I found it all quite confusing when I first started looking for domain names and a little bit daunting and worried that I may not choose a good one.

Although I didn’t have any worries with my sites being hosted by Wealthy Affiliate, they take care of all the site management so all I need to concentrate on is writing posts!

Wishing you lots of success too!

  • Hi there! I just finished reading your article about checking for domain name availability and thought I would just drop you a quick comment.

I have been working online for quite a few years now and over the years I’ve owned quite a few different website domains. Going back a few years ago it was the done thing to go out and look for a domain name with your target keyword in it. These days I know this is not really recommended.

But one thing that is still a bit of a mystery to me is the domain extension itself. Is it better to get a dot com domain or a dot net? Or can you go for one of the new domain names like .news or .WS? My question is this… If I can’t get a domain name with a .net or .com extension, would it make any difference to buy a domain with one of the new domain extensions like .blog for instance?

If you put two identical sites together, one with a dot com, one with dot blog, which would get the most traffic?

I know .com domains are the most popular. But are they better in terms of SEO?

    Thanks for your help!

    Andrew

    • Hi Andrew,

      Thanks for stopping by.

I have always believed the best domain to go for is .com as in the past this has been the prefered one for higher traffic.

That said, a lot of good .com domains have already been taken, and if you want to acquire a particular name, you may need to pay a premium rate.

So there seems to be a new trend towards others like .blog or .shop etc. They also provide you with an idea of the type of niche or industry they fall into.

This is also being driven by Google so it will be very interesting to see how they compare in terms of SEO in the future.

Thanks for your comments, it’s much appreciated
