Having a domain name is important for your business or blog as this is how the world will find you on the internet, it is your World Wide Web address, so to speak. Your very own piece of the internet, much like real estate.
It is a good idea to spend some time deciding your domain name and what type of domain name will be best suited to your website. Do not be in a hurry with this one as it will often set the tone for your site and business.
Owning your own domain has its benefits. As you develop your site and increase your rankings in Google, Bing and Yahoo your domain will also increase in value, which can later be sold for a profit.
Here I will help you to understand when starting your own business or blog, how to check for domain names and availability as well as suitable companies to host either for free or at prices to suit all budgets.
Best blog domain names
When you build a website you will need an address so people searching for your company or blog can easily find you. Just like the physical address of your home or business.
Within the internet, this is in effect an URL address, but to make it simple for us non-IT folk we use names which are either linked to the name of the business or the name of the site.
When choosing the name there are a few things to bear in mind.
A website for a business should contain the business name –If you have a local business and your website is to drive more customers to your premises then the name on the site and business should be the same so people can easily search.
It is best to avoid characters and symbols in your domain name. – we are all living a busier life these days, one where people want to find information on the go. It is, therefore, best to use domain names which can be typed into the browser quickly.
Greatwebsite.com is a much better option than gr8website.com. although “8” can be typed faster not everyone will realise the word has been substituted by the number so you could end up losing traffic.
Local support – if you are in a business or have a blog which is targeting a local audience then you may wish to opt for a local domain, such as co.uk or co.za. This is great if you intend to deliver to a local audience, but if you wish to expand to a global audience then rather choose a .com domain from the beginning.
It does not need to contain keywords – keywords are best used in your posts and articles on the website for SEO and to direct traffic.
Use one of the common domains .com .org .net – When people type in a name to search for a website they will use these as they are more familiar. Almost 50% of the websites are .com. If your preferred name has been taken with .com TLD, you can opt to use .org or .net or contact the owner of .com to see if they will be willing to sell their domain.
Trendy names – although most websites end in .com there are now more options available for trendy names such as .guru or .photography.
Research options for domain names
If you already have a site name in mind and wish to register your own domain you will first need to check it’s availability.
But some people find it hard to think of a name or are worried that it is already being used by another company or blog.
It is advisable to check the availability first and there a number of companies who can assist you to do this.
This is a great tool to use if you are not sure of your preferred name and are in need of some inspiration and guidance.
Simply type your preferred name in the box provided and it will let you know if this exact name is available in the preferred .com option. If so great!
If not it will give you options of other domains such as .org .net. Etc which you can then chose.
One of the reasons I like this particular platform is it provides so many additional names from which to choose and some that you certainly would not have thought to consider.
Some other popular domain name generators you may wish to investigate
Nameboy – One of the oldest name generators who has been helping website owners since 1999.
Domain.com – Another popular domain name generator with plenty of options
Domain name registrars
As we mentioned your domain is, in essence, your Internet real estate so it is critical to know that registrar of your domain is a reputable, trustworthy company
There are plenty of registrars in the market, here are my recommendations.
GoDaddy – A very popular registrar and website host. Their initial offer to register your .com domain is very inviting with offers as low as $2.99 / for your 1st year when you register 2 years together, but a word of caution, your 2nd year will increase to $17.99/year. If you are just starting out with your blog or online business I would suggest you initially register for one year only until you are sure of the direction and name for your business.
Bluehost – They offer domain registers with a variety of annual prices for the different TLD’s (Top-Level Domain).
Namecheap – This company offer, as their name implies, very cheap domain registers. However, as usual, there is a catch. All other services come at an additional price and the first year’s price is cheaper but will increase in year 2. You do however receive WhoisGuard for free.
My absolute favourite registrar is Wealthy Affiliate
When using Wealthy Affiliate to register you have an option to purchase for a single annual period with the option to extend this further if you want to secure the name. The cost is the same in the second year as year one.
After the initial period and if you have opted for an Auto-Renewal, Wealthy Affiliate will contact you when the renewal date is approaching as a reminder.
Don’t worry if you have already purchased a domain name and wish to move it to another host this is usually acceptable as in the case at Wealthy Affiliate
My main source of information for building a website comes from my membership within a great community of Wealthy Affiliate.
Over the years I have learned a lot about domains from the lessons included in their university.
Apart from the lessons provided Wealthy Affiliate they also offer website hosting services and supply products to assist with keyword research.
Again I use their hosting services for all my websites and it is where I go to purchase my domains once I am happy with my choice of name.
